Biological Neural Network

Biological neural networks (BNNs) are the subject of intense research aiming to understand their information processing mechanisms and translate these principles into more efficient and robust artificial neural networks (ANNs). Current research focuses on developing biologically plausible learning rules (like STDP and Hebbian learning), exploring novel architectures inspired by BNN structure (e.g., modular networks, small-world networks), and analyzing the role of factors such as neuronal diversity, spatiotemporal dynamics, and noise in BNN function. This research is significant because it promises to improve ANN performance, energy efficiency, and generalizability, while also providing crucial insights into the fundamental workings of the brain.
