Biomedical Entity Linking
Biomedical entity linking (BioEL) aims to automatically connect mentions of biomedical concepts (e.g., diseases, genes) in text to their corresponding entries in structured knowledge bases like UMLS. Current research emphasizes improving accuracy and efficiency, particularly for rare entities and across diverse data sources, using techniques like generative models, extreme multi-label ranking, and large language models (LLMs) within retrieval-enhanced learning frameworks. These advancements are crucial for facilitating large-scale text mining, clinical data standardization, and cross-source knowledge integration within the biomedical domain, ultimately accelerating scientific discovery and improving healthcare.
