Byzantine Seal

Byzantine seals, small lead artifacts bearing Greek inscriptions, are being investigated using advanced digital methods to unlock their historical and linguistic information. Current research focuses on developing deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks, for automated character recognition and transcription of the often-degraded seal images. This work is significant for its potential to accelerate the analysis of vast collections of Byzantine seals, providing new insights into Byzantine society, language, and religious practices.
