Central Pattern Generator
Central Pattern Generators (CPGs) are neural circuits that produce rhythmic outputs, crucial for controlling locomotion and other repetitive movements in animals. Current research focuses on developing artificial CPGs using various models, including coupled oscillators (like Matsuoka or FitzHugh-Nagumo), spiking neural networks, and hybrid approaches combining CPGs with reinforcement learning or evolutionary algorithms to enhance adaptability and robustness in robotic control. This work is significant because it offers bio-inspired solutions for creating more efficient, adaptable, and natural-looking movements in robots, with applications ranging from legged robots navigating complex terrains to prosthetic limb control.
