Cortical Folding Pattern

Cortical folding patterns, the intricate arrangement of gyri and sulci on the brain's surface, exhibit significant inter-individual variability, hindering the identification of folding patterns as biomarkers for neurological and psychiatric disorders. Current research focuses on developing robust computational methods, particularly deep learning approaches like contrastive learning and beta-VAEs, and graph-matching techniques applied to sulcal graphs, to analyze this variability and identify consistent patterns across large populations. These advancements aim to improve the accuracy of identifying rare folding patterns associated with neurodevelopmental disorders and to better understand the relationship between brain function and cortical anatomy.
