Deforestation Area

Deforestation monitoring aims to accurately map and quantify forest loss, primarily driven by agricultural expansion and other human activities. Current research heavily utilizes satellite imagery (optical and SAR) analyzed by deep learning models, including U-Net, Vision Transformers, and other convolutional neural networks, to classify deforestation drivers and estimate its extent. These advancements improve the accuracy and timeliness of deforestation detection, supporting better environmental management and policy decisions by providing crucial data on forest cover change. The development of robust, efficient models, particularly those handling cloud cover and limited ground truth data, remains a key focus.
