Depth of Field

Depth of field (DoF), the range of distances in an image that appear acceptably sharp, is a crucial aspect of image formation and perception. Current research focuses on computationally extending DoF, particularly in mobile and microscopic imaging, using techniques like neural radiance fields (NeRFs), Gaussian splatting, and deep learning models to correct aberrations, estimate depth, and synthesize realistic blur effects. These advancements enable improved image quality, novel view synthesis, and enhanced capabilities in applications ranging from mobile photography to microscopy, impacting both scientific imaging and consumer technologies.
