Depth Sensing

Depth sensing, the process of measuring distances to objects in a scene, is crucial for numerous applications, particularly in robotics and autonomous systems. Current research focuses on improving the accuracy and robustness of depth estimation, especially in challenging scenarios involving transparent or specular surfaces, using techniques like deep learning-based methods (including diffusion models and convolutional neural networks) and incorporating geometric constraints. These advancements are driving progress in real-time depth estimation for embedded systems and enabling applications such as collision avoidance in UAVs and improved robotic manipulation, as well as self-calibration of robotic systems using only onboard depth sensors.
