Diminished Reality
Diminished reality (DR) focuses on removing real-world objects from a user's view, either by replacing them with background imagery or entirely obscuring them, contrasting with augmented reality's addition of virtual elements. Current research emphasizes real-time inpainting techniques, often leveraging deep learning models like structure-aware generative networks and optimized versions of existing algorithms (e.g., ProPainter), to achieve seamless object removal and background reconstruction in various applications, including medical imaging and industrial settings. This field is significant for its potential to enhance user experiences in augmented reality applications, improve the efficiency of tasks like data collection and object manipulation, and facilitate more intuitive human-computer interaction.
