Discourse Entity

Discourse entity (DE) recognition focuses on identifying and tracking entities within text, crucial for understanding narratives and conversations. Current research emphasizes improving the ability of large language models (LLMs), particularly those pre-trained on code, to accurately track DEs, even across complex sentences and changing states. This involves developing new evaluation datasets that probe LLMs' understanding of semantic properties like existence, uniqueness, and plurality, and exploring the effectiveness of different model architectures and training techniques, such as self-alignment and fine-tuning on specialized corpora. Advances in DE recognition are vital for improving natural language processing applications, such as information extraction from biomedical literature and enhancing human-computer interaction.
