Discourse Information

Discourse information, encompassing the structure and relationships between sentences and paragraphs beyond individual sentence meaning, is a crucial area of natural language processing (NLP) research aiming to improve machine understanding of text. Current research focuses on developing robust discourse parsers, often leveraging large language models (LLMs) and graph neural networks, to capture both intra- and inter-sentence relationships, and evaluating these models using newly developed benchmarks that assess discourse phenomena across diverse NLP tasks. This work is significant for advancing NLP capabilities in areas like machine translation, dialogue systems, and scientific writing assistance, ultimately leading to more sophisticated and contextually aware AI systems.
