Distortion Field
Distortion fields represent the mapping of points from a distorted space to a corrected space, addressing challenges in various applications. Current research focuses on accurately estimating these fields, particularly using deep neural networks, which offer advantages over traditional methods like principal component analysis, especially for complex, non-linear distortions and high-dimensional data. This work is crucial for improving the accuracy of fingerprint recognition by correcting for skin deformation and enhancing the realism and comfort of wide field-of-view near-eye displays by compensating for optical distortions. The resulting improvements in image processing and biometric security have significant practical implications.
