Dual Use

Dual-use research focuses on mitigating the risks of technologies and scientific advancements that can be used for both beneficial and harmful purposes. Current research emphasizes identifying and mitigating dual-use risks in artificial intelligence, particularly large language models and other generative AI, and in chemical and biological domains, often leveraging existing frameworks like the Dual Use Research of Concern (DURC) model. This research aims to develop methods for evaluating and managing these risks, including techniques like open benchmarks and red teaming, and strategies for data anonymization to prevent malicious applications while preserving scientific progress. The ultimate goal is to foster responsible innovation and prevent the misuse of powerful technologies.
