Fair Utility
Fair utility research addresses the inherent tension between maximizing the overall effectiveness of a system (utility) and ensuring equitable outcomes for all individuals (fairness), particularly in algorithmic decision-making. Current research focuses on developing methods to quantify and navigate this trade-off, exploring techniques like data re-weighting, constrained optimization, and novel payment rules within various contexts such as job recommendations, pricing, and resource allocation. This work is crucial for mitigating algorithmic bias and promoting fairness in high-impact applications, leading to more equitable and efficient systems across diverse domains.
