Functional Insufficiency
Functional insufficiency (FI) research focuses on identifying and mitigating shortcomings in systems, particularly in complex automated systems like self-driving cars and in monitoring the health of vulnerable populations. Current research employs diverse approaches, including analyzing data from autonomous vehicle testing to identify failure modes, developing novel architectural designs like multi-channel safety systems, and utilizing machine learning techniques such as Markov models to detect behavioral changes indicative of functional decline. Understanding and addressing FIs is crucial for improving the safety and reliability of autonomous systems and for enabling more effective proactive healthcare interventions.
