Group Favoritism
Group favoritism, the preferential treatment of one's own group, is a pervasive phenomenon studied across diverse fields, from social psychology to artificial intelligence. Current research focuses on understanding its mechanisms, particularly the interplay between ingroup favoritism and outgroup bias, and developing methods to detect and mitigate bias in algorithms and models, including the use of novel metrics like Favi-Score. This work is significant because it reveals how seemingly objective systems can perpetuate societal biases, impacting areas like recommendation systems and even potentially influencing political polarization through affective polarization dynamics. Addressing group favoritism is crucial for developing fairer and more equitable AI systems and for understanding the dynamics of social cohesion and division.
