Human Hippocampus
The human hippocampus is a brain region crucial for spatial navigation, episodic memory formation, and integrating sensory information. Current research focuses on understanding its complex internal organization, using techniques like 3D-PLI imaging and machine learning models (including deep learning architectures like convolutional neural networks and recurrent networks such as LSTMs) to analyze its structure and function, often comparing these to computational models inspired by hippocampal processes. These efforts aim to clarify the hippocampus's role in various neurological and psychiatric disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia, and to improve our understanding of memory and learning mechanisms, potentially informing the development of more efficient artificial intelligence systems.
