Landing Zone
Safe autonomous landing zone (LZ) identification is crucial for the safe operation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), particularly in challenging or unexpected situations. Current research focuses on developing real-time algorithms, often integrating computer vision (e.g., semantic segmentation, object detection) with geometric analysis of point cloud data to assess LZ suitability based on factors like slope, flatness, and obstacle presence. These methods, implemented on lightweight embedded systems, aim to improve the reliability and safety of UAV operations across diverse environments, from urban areas to extraterrestrial settings, impacting both the safety of UAV deployment and the efficiency of applications like delivery services.
