Lidar Intensity
Lidar intensity, the strength of laser reflections captured by lidar sensors, is increasingly recognized as a valuable data source for enhancing 3D scene understanding. Current research focuses on leveraging intensity information for improved object detection and classification, particularly in challenging scenarios like transparent object identification and off-road environments, employing techniques such as multi-layer intensity mapping and deep learning architectures (e.g., GANs, U-Nets) to process and interpret this data. These advancements are significant because they improve the robustness and accuracy of autonomous navigation systems and other applications relying on lidar data, particularly in situations where traditional geometric features are insufficient. The integration of intensity data with other sensor modalities, such as RGB images, is also a growing area of interest.
