Linguistic Pragmatic

Linguistic pragmatics studies how context and implied meaning shape communication, going beyond literal interpretation of words. Current research focuses on how well large language models (LLMs) capture these nuances, particularly investigating the role of prosodic features (like intonation and duration) and the effectiveness of different training methods, such as instruction tuning and contrastive learning, in improving pragmatic understanding. These efforts aim to enhance the capabilities of AI systems in natural language processing, leading to more human-like interactions and improved performance in tasks requiring contextual understanding, such as conversation summarization and legal text interpretation.
