Linguistic Variation
Linguistic variation, the study of how language changes across different groups and contexts, aims to understand the factors driving these changes and their impact on communication and social interactions. Current research focuses on leveraging large language models (LLMs) to analyze and model this variation, particularly in areas like dialectal differences, social media language, and the biases embedded within LLMs themselves. This work is significant for improving the fairness and robustness of NLP applications, enhancing cross-lingual understanding, and providing valuable insights into the social and cultural forces shaping language evolution. Furthermore, understanding linguistic variation is crucial for developing more accurate and inclusive language technologies.
