Maximum Intensity Projection

Maximum Intensity Projection (MIP) is an image processing technique that creates a 2D representation of a 3D dataset by displaying the maximum intensity value along each projection ray. Current research focuses on leveraging MIPs to improve the efficiency and accuracy of medical image analysis, particularly in segmentation tasks for various organs and structures (e.g., vessels, tumors, and nuclei) by using MIPs as input features or loss functions within deep learning models such as U-Nets and Swin UNETR. This approach reduces annotation burden, improves segmentation quality, and enables novel applications like segmentation-free outcome prediction in cancer, ultimately enhancing diagnostic capabilities and clinical workflows.
