Metaphor Use

Metaphor understanding research focuses on computationally modeling how humans comprehend and generate metaphorical language, aiming to improve artificial intelligence's ability to process nuanced human communication. Current research investigates this through various approaches, including the application of density matrices, Rational Speech Act models, and transformer-based deep learning models, often evaluated using newly created benchmark datasets designed to assess different aspects of metaphor processing, such as intentionality and multimodal aspects. These advancements have implications for natural language processing, improving machine translation, sentiment analysis, and the development of more human-like AI systems, while also offering insights into the cognitive mechanisms underlying human metaphor comprehension.
