Prototype Based Explanation
Prototype-based explanation is a rapidly developing area of Explainable AI (XAI) focused on improving the transparency and trustworthiness of machine learning models by representing their decisions through readily interpretable prototypes – representative examples from the training data. Current research emphasizes developing novel model architectures and algorithms, such as those based on k-medoids clustering or specialized distance metrics, to generate these prototypes for various model types, including deep neural networks, tree ensembles, and graph neural networks. This approach is particularly valuable in high-stakes domains like medicine, where understanding model reasoning is crucial for building trust and facilitating human-AI collaboration. The ultimate goal is to create models that not only predict accurately but also provide clear, understandable explanations of their predictions.
