Qualitative Reasoning
Qualitative reasoning (QR) focuses on representing and reasoning with knowledge using qualitative descriptions rather than numerical values, aiming to model human-like reasoning about the world. Current research emphasizes integrating QR with deep neural networks, particularly large language models, to leverage their ability to learn complex representations while addressing the opacity of their reasoning processes through techniques like ontology extraction and hierarchical clustering. This work is crucial for improving the reliability and explainability of AI systems, particularly in applications requiring commonsense reasoning and the understanding of causality, and for developing robust benchmarks to evaluate progress in this area.
