Quasar Host Galaxy

Quasar host galaxies are the galaxies harboring quasars, extremely luminous active galactic nuclei powered by supermassive black holes. Current research focuses on improving the identification and classification of these galaxies using deep learning techniques, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and vision transformers (ViTs), often applied to multi-band imaging and spectroscopic data from large-scale surveys like DESI. These advancements are crucial for accurately mapping the distribution of quasars and their host galaxies, providing insights into the evolution of supermassive black holes and the large-scale structure of the universe. Improved classification methods also enable more precise measurements of quasar properties, such as black hole mass, and facilitate studies of gravitational lensing.
