Retinal Atrophy
Retinal atrophy, encompassing conditions like age-related macular degeneration and retinopathy of prematurity, is characterized by the degeneration of retinal cells leading to vision loss. Current research heavily utilizes deep learning, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and, to a lesser extent, vision transformers (ViTs), for automated detection and quantification of atrophy, blood vessel abnormalities, and other retinal features from various imaging modalities. These AI-driven approaches aim to improve diagnostic accuracy, speed, and consistency compared to traditional manual methods, ultimately enhancing patient care and facilitating large-scale screening programs. The development of robust and explainable AI models, along with the creation of comprehensive annotated datasets, remains a key focus to improve the clinical translation of these technologies.
