Retrieval Heuristic

Retrieval heuristics are rules of thumb used in information retrieval to efficiently identify relevant documents, often prioritizing speed and simplicity over perfect accuracy. Current research focuses on improving the performance of these heuristics, particularly by integrating them with advanced neural models like BERT and exploring hybrid approaches combining neural and traditional methods. This work aims to enhance the effectiveness and trustworthiness of information retrieval systems, addressing limitations such as frequent retrieval failures and the need for interpretability, ultimately impacting the efficiency and accuracy of search engines and other information access tools.
