Scene Recognition

Scene recognition, the task of automatically identifying the context of an image or video, aims to build computer systems that understand visual environments as humans do. Current research focuses on improving robustness to image degradation (e.g., blur, low light) using techniques like adaptive region selection within convolutional neural networks and transformer-based restoration frameworks that handle composite degradations. Significant efforts are also directed towards mitigating biases in existing models, particularly socioeconomic biases, and enhancing the explainability and accessibility of scene recognition systems for applications such as assistive technologies for visually impaired individuals and autonomous driving. These advancements are crucial for a wide range of applications, from improving accessibility for people with disabilities to enhancing safety and efficiency in autonomous systems.
