Skin Tone
Skin tone analysis is a rapidly evolving field focusing on developing accurate and unbiased methods for assessing and classifying skin color, particularly in medical image analysis and related applications. Current research heavily utilizes deep learning models, including convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and vision transformers (ViTs), often employing transfer learning and domain adaptation techniques to improve performance across diverse skin tones. A major focus is mitigating algorithmic bias, which frequently manifests as disparities in diagnostic accuracy between lighter and darker skin tones, impacting the fairness and reliability of AI-driven tools in dermatology and other fields. This work has significant implications for improving healthcare access and equity, particularly for underrepresented populations.
