Societal Scale Risk
Societal-scale risk research focuses on identifying and mitigating the widespread negative consequences stemming from advanced technologies, particularly artificial intelligence systems. Current research emphasizes evaluating the societal impact of algorithms, such as recommender systems, and developing methods for ex-post risk assessment using machine learning techniques to analyze coupled human-infrastructure systems performance and predict events like emergency department boarding. This work is crucial for informing policy decisions, improving risk management strategies across various sectors, and promoting the responsible development and deployment of powerful technologies.
