Tool Segmentation
Tool segmentation in robotic surgery aims to accurately identify and delineate surgical instruments within images and video, enabling improved computer-assisted interventions and augmented reality feedback. Current research emphasizes developing robust segmentation models, often based on deep learning architectures like U-Net variations, that are resilient to real-world image corruptions such as bleeding, smoke, and low light conditions. This focus on robustness is driven by the critical need for reliable tool identification in high-stakes surgical settings, with ongoing efforts exploring both fully-supervised and weakly-supervised learning approaches, as well as the integration of kinematic data and causal models to improve accuracy and generalization. The development of large, publicly available datasets, like CholecInstanceSeg, is also crucial for advancing the field and facilitating the development of more accurate and reliable algorithms.
