Unified Medical Language System
The Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) is a comprehensive knowledge base integrating biomedical vocabularies and ontologies, aiming to standardize medical terminology and facilitate interoperability across healthcare systems. Current research focuses on leveraging UMLS within advanced natural language processing (NLP) models, such as large language models (LLMs) and transformer-based architectures, to improve tasks like entity recognition, relation extraction, and clinical text normalization in both high- and low-resource settings. This work is crucial for enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of clinical information extraction, improving diagnostic support systems, and ultimately advancing biomedical research and healthcare delivery.
