Variable Friction
Variable friction research focuses on developing surfaces and mechanisms that can dynamically switch between high and low friction states, enabling improved dexterity in robotic manipulation. Current efforts concentrate on designing novel materials and control systems, including origami-inspired surfaces and pneumatic actuators that regulate lubricant application, to achieve precise friction modulation. This work is significant for advancing robotics, particularly in areas like grasping and in-hand manipulation, where controlled friction is crucial for robust and adaptable object handling.
