Word Substitution
Word substitution, the process of replacing words in text while maintaining meaning or achieving a specific effect, is a key area of research in natural language processing. Current efforts focus on developing robust algorithms, often gradient-based or leveraging large language models, to generate effective substitutions for tasks like adversarial attacks against language models, watermark evasion, and data augmentation. These advancements are crucial for improving the robustness and security of NLP systems, as well as for enhancing applications such as machine translation and lexical resource creation. However, challenges remain in ensuring the grammaticality and semantic preservation of substitutions, highlighting the need for more sophisticated methods that consider contextual information and linguistic constraints.
