Deontic Modality
Deontic modality focuses on expressing obligations, permissions, and prohibitions, particularly within legal and ethical contexts. Current research emphasizes automated detection of these modalities in complex texts like legal documents, often employing transformer-based language models to identify agent-specific obligations and permissions within sentences. This work aims to improve accessibility to legal information and enhance understanding of rights and responsibilities, with applications ranging from legal tech to ethical AI development. The development of robust annotated datasets is a crucial ongoing challenge in this field.
