Explainable Papilledema Indicator
Explainable papilledema indicators are being developed to improve the automated diagnosis of this optic nerve swelling condition, often a sign of serious neurological issues. Research focuses on using deep learning algorithms, often coupled with 3D optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans, to identify key structural features of the optic nerve head that distinguish papilledema from similar-appearing conditions like optic disc drusen. These methods aim to achieve diagnostic accuracy comparable to expert ophthalmologists, improving the speed and reliability of diagnosis, particularly in pediatric populations. The ultimate goal is to provide clinicians with a reliable, explainable tool for early and accurate detection of papilledema.
