LCZ Mapping
Local Climate Zone (LCZ) mapping aims to classify urban and surrounding landscapes into distinct categories based on their physical characteristics and influence on local climate. Current research focuses on automating this process using remote sensing data and machine learning algorithms, moving away from labor-intensive manual methods, with a particular emphasis on developing robust rule-based systems that leverage data like LiDAR to improve accuracy and scalability. This automated mapping significantly improves the efficiency and spatial extent of LCZ studies, enabling more comprehensive analyses of urban heat islands, microclimates, and the effectiveness of urban planning strategies for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
