Left Atrium

The left atrium (LA), a crucial chamber of the heart, is the focus of intense research aimed at improving its functional analysis for diagnosing and prognosing cardiovascular diseases, particularly atrial fibrillation. Current research emphasizes developing advanced image analysis techniques, including deep learning models like U-Net and transformers, to accurately segment the LA, map its motion and deformation throughout the cardiac cycle (using 3D cine MRI and other imaging modalities), and quantify scar tissue. These improved analytical tools offer the potential for more precise biomarkers of atrial health, leading to better patient stratification and treatment strategies.
