Sperm Whale
Sperm whale research currently focuses on improving the automated detection and analysis of their complex acoustic communication, including both codas (complex communication signals) and echolocation clicks used for navigation. Advanced signal processing techniques, such as graph-based clustering and multi-pulse structure analysis, are employed to distinguish these sounds from ambient noise, even in challenging environments with low signal-to-noise ratios and overlapping whale vocalizations. These advancements enable more accurate characterization of sperm whale communication patterns and population dynamics, contributing significantly to our understanding of their social behavior and improving conservation efforts.
