SonicMaster: Towards Controllable All-in-One Music Restoration and Mastering

Authors: Jan MelechovskyAmbuj MehrishAbhinaba RoyDorien Herremans

Abstract

Music recordings often suffer from audio quality issues such as excessive reverberation, distortion, clipping, tonal imbalances, and a narrowed stereo image, especially when created in non-professional settings without specialized equipment or expertise. These problems are typically corrected using separate specialized tools and manual adjustments. In this paper, we introduce SonicMaster, the first unified generative model for music restoration and mastering that addresses a broad spectrum of audio artifacts with text-based control. SonicMaster is conditioned on natural language instructions to apply targeted enhancements, or can operate in an automatic mode for general restoration. To train this model, we construct the SonicMaster dataset, a large dataset of paired degraded and high-quality tracks by simulating common degradation types with nineteen degradation functions belonging to five enhancements groups: equalization, dynamics, reverb, amplitude, and stereo. Our approach leverages a flow-matching generative training paradigm to learn an audio transformation that maps degraded inputs to their cleaned, mastered versions guided by text prompts. Objective audio quality metrics demonstrate that SonicMaster significantly improves sound quality across all artifact categories. Furthermore, subjective listening tests confirm that listeners prefer SonicMaster's enhanced outputs over other baselines.

Music Restoration via Latent Operator Optimization and Diffusion Model Priors

Music restoration seeks to recover a clean signal from an observed recording degraded by an unknown effect, distortion, or corruption. Existing systems often rely on paired training data and distortion-specific supervision, which limits their use when the forward process is not known in advance. We propose LOUDAR (Latent-space Optimization of Unknown Distortion for Audio Restoration) a general-purpose restoration method that operates in the latent space of a pretrained audio autoencoder and models the unknown distortion as a learnable latent operator. At inference time, LOUDAR alternates between estimating the clean latent variable and updating the latent operator parameters. An unconditional latent diffusion model provides a prior over clean audio and regularizes this inference by steering the latent estimate toward the manifold of clean recordings. Because the degradation model is adapted per input, the approach is broadly applicable across diverse restoration problems. We evaluate LOUDAR on singing voice effect removal and restoration, as well as guitar distortion removal, and show that it consistently improves over degraded inputs and is competitive with supervised and unsupervised baselines in waveform and latent domains.

SongCraft: Unified Song Generation and Editing with Reconstructive Learning

Song generation and editing have mostly been treated as separate tasks. Existing editing methods often require noise injection and regeneration or curated paired training data. We propose a unified approach for song generation and editing based on reconstructive pretraining, in which a model is trained to reconstruct audio from varying numbers of interpretable conditions. With conditions such as text and lyrics, the model learns to generate diverse songs. With dense conditions specifying fine-grained music attributes, the model learns to reconstruct the target and enables editing by modifying any single attribute while keeping others fixed. This leads to SongCraft, a latent flow matching based model trained for both generation and fine-grained editing. To improve song generation quality, we further introduce word-level phoneme alignment that improves pronunciation learning and accelerates convergence, beat conditioning that improves general musicality, and representation alignment on VAE latent space that produces semantically meaningful latents for improved generation quality. Experiments show that SongCraft achieves the lowest word error rate among evaluated song generation baselines while maintaining competitive audio quality. We further show that a single model can support editing of lyrics, vocal melody, beats, and singer identity, and we also study the trade-off between reconstruction quality and editability.

UniSonate: A Unified Model for Speech, Music, and Sound Effect Generation with Text Instructions

Generative audio modeling has largely been fragmented into specialized tasks, text-to-speech (TTS), text-to-music (TTM), and text-to-audio (TTA), each operating under heterogeneous control paradigms. Unifying these modalities remains a fundamental challenge due to the intrinsic dissonance between structured semantic representations (speech/music) and unstructured acoustic textures (sound effects). In this paper, we introduce UniSonate, a unified flow-matching framework capable of synthesizing speech, music, and sound effects through a standardized, reference-free natural language instruction interface. To reconcile structural disparities, we propose a novel dynamic token injection mechanism that projects unstructured environmental sounds into a structured temporal latent space, enabling precise duration control within a phoneme-driven Multimodal Diffusion Transformer (MM-DiT). Coupled with a multi-stage curriculum learning strategy, this approach effectively mitigates cross-modal optimization conflicts. Extensive experiments demonstrate that UniSonate achieves state-of-the-art performance in instruction-based TTS (WER 1.47%) and TTM (SongEval Coherence 3.18), while maintaining competitive fidelity in TTA. Crucially, we observe positive transfer, where joint training on diverse audio data significantly enhances structural coherence and prosodic expressiveness compared to single-task baselines.
