Abstract

Real-world constrained multi-objective optimization problems (CMOPs) commonly involve multiple constraints, and understanding and exploiting their coupling relationships is crucial for efficient optimization. Recent constraint-decoupling methods handle individual constraints separately, but they generally search only in the evolutionary direction to approximate single-constraint Pareto fronts (SCPFs). In this study, we show that part or all of the constrained Pareto front (CPF) may be unrelated to any SCPF and instead be shaped by the boundaries of infeasible regions. We refer to such a portion as the independent CPF (ICPF) and introduce the reverse CPF (RCPF) to characterize its associated informative infeasible boundaries. Based on these observations, we propose a bidirectional constraint-decoupling coevolutionary algorithm named DCF2D. DCF2D dynamically identifies the constraints obstructing the main population and activates constraint-specific auxiliary populations. These populations adaptively search in the evolutionary direction for the corresponding SCPFs or in the reverse evolutionary direction for the corresponding RCPFs. Its three-stage framework integrates unconstrained global exploration, event-driven bidirectional coevolution, and final convergence refinement. Experiments on 87 benchmark instances from seven test suites and 28 real-world engineering CMOPs demonstrate that DCF2D achieves the best overall performance among nine algorithms. A new dual-population constrained multi-objective evolutionary optimization algorithm with repair constraint handling for structural optimization

Structural optimization problems often involve a large number of decision variables and highly non-convex feasible regions, making convergence to the true Pareto front extremely challenging. Even when convergence is achievable, it typically requires thousands of function evaluations, resulting in significant computational cost. This highlights the need for efficient and robust optimization algorithms for real-world engineering applications. In this study, we introduce a novel constrained multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, termed DPCME. The algorithm employs two interacting populations that exchange information, enabling effective global exploration and reducing the risk of convergence to local optima. To further enhance performance, a recent repair-based constraint-handling technique is incorporated, and alternative repair approaches are proposed and systematically evaluated. The proposed algorithm is tested on three engineering problems: the 72-bar truss, the 120-bar truss, and a chemical tanker structure, each involving hundreds of nonlinear failure constraints. Its performance is evaluated against state-of-the-art constrained multi-objective optimization algorithms from the latest PlatEMO package. A total of 43 algorithms are initially tested, from which the 12 best-performing methods are selected for detailed comparison. The results demonstrate that DPCME achieves superior or competitive convergence and diversity across all test cases, and that the inclusion of repair-based constraint handling further improves its performance.

General-Purpose Co-Evolutionary Construction of Parallel Algorithm Portfolios for Multi-Objective Binary Optimization

Despite recent progress in constructing generalizable parallel algorithm portfolios (PAPs), no general-purpose approach is yet available for multi-objective binary optimization problems (MOBOPs). To fill this gap, this paper proposes domain-agnostic co-evolution of parameterized search for multi-objective binary optimization~(DACMO), which features two technical innovations. First, we propose a neural instance representation architecture that decouples domain-invariant and instance-specific features, enabling class-consistent instance generation across varying dimensions without problem-specific instance generators. Second, we introduce LLM-based automatic search operator generation into PAP construction, extending the search space from parameter tuning of predefined templates to operator-level algorithm design. We evaluate DACMO on four representative MOBOP classes to demonstrate its effectiveness as a general-purpose PAP construction method: the multi-objective match max problem~(MMMP), the multi-objective knapsack problem~(MKP), the multi-objective contamination control problem (MCCP), and the multi-objective complementary influence maximization problem~(MCIMP). Experimental results show that DACMO can be directly applied to all four problem classes without modification, outperforms PAPs built from classic MOEA templates, and achieves performance comparable to a privileged state-of-the-art baseline that relies on manually designed problem-specific instance generators, while outperforming it on two of the four evaluated problem classes.

DE-2LS: Differential Evolution with Lightweight Late Local Search for Constrained Numerical Optimization

Constrained single-objective numerical optimization requires a careful balance among feasibility, objective convergence, and computational efficiency under a fixed function-evaluation budget. This paper proposes DE-2LS, a late-stage, locally search-enhanced variant of differential evolution built on the RDEx framework. The proposed method preserves the original RDEx components, including mutation and crossover operators, success-history adaptation, archive mechanism, population-size reduction, and εε-based constraint handling. A lightweight coordinate-pattern local search is added as a guarded polishing component around the current best solution. It is activated only in the late stage of the run, uses a small evaluation budget, and accepts candidates through a feasibility-aware comparison rule. Ablation results show that the finalized DE-2LS configuration achieves the best U-score among all tested variants, confirming that controlled late-stage refinement is more effective than aggressive or premature local search. In the direct comparison with RDEx, DE-2LS achieves a 5.58% gain in U-score. In the four-algorithm comparison, DE-2LS obtains the highest overall U-score of 80968 and the best total rank of 48 among RDEx, CL-SRDE, and UDE-III. These results indicate that DE-2LS improves the exploitation capability of the RDEx-based search framework while preserving its speed advantage under the combined speed-accuracy scoring criterion.
