Abstract

Generative image composition aims to regenerate the given foreground object in the background image to produce a realistic composite image. Some high-authenticity methods can adjust foreground pose/view to be compatible with background, while some high-fidelity methods can preserve the foreground details accurately. However, existing methods can hardly achieve both goals at the same time. In this work, we propose a two-stage strategy to achieve both goals. In the first stage, we use high-authenticity method to generate reasonable foreground shape, serving as the condition of high-fidelity method in the second stage. The experiments on MureCOM dataset verify the effectiveness of our two-stage strategy. The code and model have been released at https://github.com/bcmi/OSInsert-Image-Composition.

PICS: Pairwise Image Compositing with Spatial Interactions

Despite strong single-turn performance, diffusion-based image compositing often struggles to preserve coherent spatial relations in pairwise or sequential edits, where subsequent insertions may overwrite previously generated content and disrupt physical consistency. We introduce PICS, a self-supervised composition-by-decomposition paradigm that composes objects in parallel while explicitly modeling the compositional interactions among (fully-/partially-)visible objects and background. At its core, an Interaction Transformer employs mask-guided Mixture-of-Experts to route background, exclusive, and overlap regions to dedicated experts, with an adaptive α-blending strategy that infers a compatibility-aware fusion of overlapping objects while preserving boundary fidelity. To further enhance robustness to geometric variations, we incorporate geometry-aware augmentations covering both out-of-plane and in-plane pose changes of objects. Our method delivers superior pairwise compositing quality and substantially improved stability, with extensive evaluations across virtual try-on, indoor, and street scene settings showing consistent gains over state-of-the-art baselines. Hybrid Generative-Discriminative Object Placement

As an important operation of image composition, object placement aims to predict the plausible placement (location, scale) for the inserted foreground object. Previous object placement methods can be divided into generative methods and discriminative methods, both of which cannot balance efficiency and effectiveness well. In this work, we propose a semi-generative method in the middle ground between them. In particular, we assign uniformly distributed anchors on the background. Then, we fuse foreground and background features to predict the rationality score for each anchor and predict plausible placement sets for positive anchors. Extensive experiments on the OPA dataset show that our method can strike a good balance between efficiency and effectiveness.

InsHuman: Towards Natural and Identity-Preserving Human Insertion

Human insertion aims to naturally place specific individuals into a target background. Although existing image editing models may have such ability, they often produce failure cases, including inappropriate human pose in new background, inconsistent number of people, and modified facial identity. Moreover, publicly available human datasets often lack full-body portraits and realistic physical interaction between humans and their background. To address these challenges, we propose InsHuman for natural and identity-preserving human insertion. Specifically, we propose Human-Background Adaptive Fusion (HBAF), which detects foreground humans to obtain a binary mask and applies region-aware weighting to align the human regions between predicted and ground-truth latents, ensuring the person's pose, count, and overall appearance are coherently adapted to the target background. We further propose Face-to-Face ID-Preserving (FFIP), which detects and matches faces between the generated image and the source image in terms of face recognition features to enforce identity consistency for each face.In addition, we propose Bidirectional Data Pairing (BDP) strategy to construct BDP-InsHuman, a high-quality dataset with realistic human-background interactions. Experiments demonstrate that InsHuman achieves significant improvements in generating plausible images while keeping human identity unchanged.
