Abstract

This paper introduces DashengTokenizer, a continuous audio tokenizer engineered for joint use in both understanding and generation tasks. Unlike conventional approaches, which train acoustic tokenizers and subsequently integrate frozen semantic knowledge, our method inverts this paradigm: we leverage frozen semantic features and inject acoustic information. In linear evaluation across 22 diverse tasks, our method outperforms previous audio codec and audio encoder baselines by a significant margin while maintaining competitive audio reconstruction quality. Notably, we demonstrate that this acoustic injection improves performance for tasks such as speech emotion recognition, music understanding, and acoustic scene classification. We further evaluate the tokenizer's generative performance on text-to-audio (TTA), text-to-music (TTM), and speech enhancement (SE). Our approach surpasses standard variational autoencoder (VAE)-based methods on TTA and TTM tasks, while its effectiveness on SE underscores its capabilities as a general-purpose audio encoder. Finally, our results challenge the prevailing assumption that VAE-based architectures are a prerequisite for audio synthesis. F3-Tokenizer: Taming Audio Autoencoder Latents for Understanding and Generation

Continuous audio autoencoders reconstruct waveforms well but often produce latents with weak structure for understanding, while self-supervised audio encoders capture semantics but are not directly decodable. This mismatch complicates a single audio tokenizer that must support both understanding and generation. We adapt continuous autoencoder latents to this setting with two components: a noise-regularized autoencoder bottleneck and a latent-side representation encoder. The bottleneck uses channel normalization and stochastic perturbation instead of KL-based variational training, yielding scale-controlled continuous latents for reconstruction and autoregressive generation. The representation encoder is trained on frozen autoencoder latents with RQ-MTP and frozen-LLM supervision. The resulting tokenizer provides high-dimensional representations for understanding while preserving normalized continuous latents as generation targets

EntangleCodec: A Unified Discrete Audio Tokenizer via Semantic-Acoustic Entanglement

Audio tokenizers serve as the discrete interface between continuous audio and Audio Language Models (ALMs), but existing tokenizers often struggle to support both understanding and generation. Reconstruction-oriented codecs preserve acoustic fidelity but lack rich semantics, while semantic-aware tokenizers typically rely on separate semantic and acoustic streams, introducing redundancy or misalignment. We propose EntangleCodec, a unified discrete audio tokenizer that learns caption-aligned semantic-acoustic representations before quantization. By aligning audio with rich captions rather than ASR transcripts, EntangleCodec captures linguistic content, speaker identity, emotion, prosody, and acoustic scenes within a compact token stream. A flow-matching diffusion decoder further enables high-quality reconstruction across speech, music, and general audio. EntangleCodec achieves reconstruction quality competitive with specialized codecs, outperforms all codec-based baselines on audio understanding by up to +7.4% on MMAR, and supports both TTS and TTA generation in a unified framework. Furthermore, EntangleCodec-based audio language models demonstrate strong scaling behavior: even at 0.6B parameters, the model surpasses specialized continuous-representation LLMs with over 13B parameters across three benchmarks using \textbf{22×\times} fewer parameters; scaling to 8B further establishes new state-of-the-art results on MMAR, highlighting that representation quality is as critical as model scale in audio language modeling. UniAudio-Token: Empowering Semantic Speech Tokenizers with General Audio Perception

Semantic speech tokenizers have become a widely used interface for Audio-LLMs, owing to their compact single-codebook design and strong linguistic alignment. However, their focus on linguistic abstraction induces acoustic blindness, limiting their applicability beyond speech-centric tasks. We propose UniAudio-Token, a framework that empowers semantic tokenizers with general audio perception without compromising speech ability. Instead of altering the semantic paradigm, UniAudio-Token mitigates its information loss through two key innovations: (1) Semantic-Acoustic Primitives (SAP) provide structured supervision by decomposing audio into linguistic content, vocal attributes, and auditory-scene primitives; and (2) Semantic-Acoustic Equilibrium (SAE) introduces a content-aware gating mechanism that adaptively restores fine-grained acoustic details from shallow layers. Extensive evaluations show that UniAudio-Token learns comprehensive universal representations while preserving high-fidelity speech generation. When integrated with downstream LLMs, it outperforms all single-codebook baseline tokenizers on both understanding and generation tasks, effectively serving as a unified audio interface. We publicly release all our code, including training and inference scripts, together with the model checkpoints at https://github.com/Tencent/Universal_Audio_Tokenizer.
