Abstract

Video temporal grounding (VTG) is a critical task in video understanding and a key capability for extending video large language models (Vid-LLMs) to broader applications. However, existing Vid-LLMs rely on uniform frame sampling to extract video information, resulting in a sparse distribution of key frames and the loss of crucial temporal cues. To address this limitation, we propose Grounded Visual Token Sampling (GroundVTS), a Vid-LLM architecture that focuses on the most informative temporal segments. GroundVTS employs a fine-grained, query-guided mechanism to filter visual tokens before feeding them into the LLM, thereby preserving essential spatio-temporal information and maintaining temporal coherence. Futhermore, we introduce a progressive optimization strategy that enables the LLM to effectively adapt to the non-uniform distribution of visual features, enhancing its ability to model temporal dependencies and achieve precise video localization. We comprehensively evaluate GroundVTS on three standard VTG benchmarks, where it outperforms existing methods, achieving a 7.7-point improvement in mIoU for moment retrieval and 12.0-point improvement in mAP for highlight detection. Foresee-to-Ground: From Predictive Temporal Perception to Evidence-Driven Reasoning for Video Temporal Grounding

Current Video-LLM approaches for Video Temporal Grounding (VTG) typically rely on direct timestamp generation from an unstructured visual-token stream, often leading to brittle numerics and inconsistent boundaries. To address this, we propose Foresee-to-Ground (F2G), a framework that reformulates VTG as a verifiable Identify-then-Measure problem. F2G integrates Predictive Temporal Perception with Evidence-Driven Reasoning: it learns boundary-sensitive temporal representations to build a video-wide evidence pool of candidate event segments, and exposes these segments to the LLM as citable evidence units that bind boundary prediction to explicit event hypotheses. By decoupling event identification from precise boundary measurement, F2G stabilizes grounding and makes predictions verifiable. Extensive experiments demonstrate that F2G consistently improves grounding accuracy across diverse benchmarks, transfers robustly across different Video-LLM backbones, and preserves general video understanding capabilities.

UniversalVTG: A Universal and Lightweight Foundation Model for Video Temporal Grounding

Video temporal grounding (VTG) is typically tackled with dataset-specific models that transfer poorly across domains and query styles. Recent efforts to overcome this limitation have adapted large multimodal language models (MLLMs) to VTG, but their high compute cost and limited video context still hinder long-video grounding. We instead scale unified supervision while keeping the model lightweight. We present UniversalVTG, a single VTG model trained with large-scale cross-dataset pretraining. An offline Query Unifier canonicalizes heterogeneous query formats into a shared declarative space, reducing linguistic mismatch and preventing the negative transfer observed under naïve joint training. Combined with an efficient grounding head, UniversalVTG scales to long, untrimmed videos. Across diverse benchmarks-GoalStep-StepGrounding, Ego4D-NLQ, TACoS, Charades-STA, and ActivityNet-Captions-one UniversalVTG checkpoint achieves state-of-the-art performance versus dedicated VTG models. Moreover, despite being >100×>100\times smaller than recent MLLM-based approaches, UniversalVTG matches or exceeds their accuracy on multiple benchmarks, offering a practical alternative to parameter-heavy MLLMs.

Bridging Time and Space: Decoupled Spatio-Temporal Alignment for Video Grounding

Spatio-Temporal Video Grounding requires jointly localizing target objects across both temporal and spatial dimensions based on natural language queries, posing fundamental challenges for existing Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs). We identify two core challenges: entangled spatio-temporal alignment, arising from coupling two heterogeneous sub-tasks within the same autoregressive output space, and dual-domain visual token redundancy, where target objects exhibit simultaneous temporal and spatial sparsity, rendering the overwhelming majority of visual tokens irrelevant to the grounding query. To address these, we propose Bridge-STG, an end-to-end framework that decouples temporal and spatial localization while maintaining semantic coherence. While decoupling is the natural solution to this entanglement, it risks creating a semantic gap between the temporal MLLM and the spatial decoder. Bridge-STG resolves this through two pivotal designs: the Spatio-Temporal Semantic Bridging (STSB) mechanism with Explicit Temporal Alignment (ETA) distills the MLLM's temporal reasoning context into enriched bridging queries as a robust semantic interface; and the Query-Guided Spatial Localization (QGSL) module leverages these queries to drive a purpose-built spatial decoder with multi-layer interactive queries and positive/negative frame sampling, jointly eliminating dual-domain visual token redundancy. Extensive experiments across multiple benchmarks demonstrate that Bridge-STG achieves state-of-the-art performance among MLLM-based methods. Bridge-STG improves average m_vIoU from 26.426.4 to 34.334.3 on VidSTG and demonstrates strong cross-task transfer across various fine-grained video understanding tasks under a unified multi-task training regime.
