Abstract

In generative semantic communication, semantic tokens guide receiver-side generative models to synthesize high-dimensional content. In challenging network environments, however, frequent token erasure distorts the conveyed semantics beyond what receiver-side recovery can restore. In this paper, we propose a token encoding framework (TokCode) for robust semantic recovery, achieving erasure resilience by restructuring redundancy in the semantic domain. TokCode uses a lightweight adapter to recast a general-purpose large language model (LLM) at the transmitter into a token encoder, exploiting the LLM's pretrained semantic prior to avoid introducing a dedicated deep model. To optimize the adapter efficiently and make it applicable across diverse channels, we develop a channel-quality-aware distillation approach for token encoder training~(CADET). Using a differentiable sentence-level semantic surrogate, CADET tunes T5 foundation models into experts for distinct erasure rates and distills them into a single reconfigurable low-rank adapter, enabling subsequent reinforcement learning (RL) to start above the plateau where direct RL stalls. Simulation results on token-based generative image transmission show that TokCode improves the image-level similarity over the best-performing receiver-side recovery benchmark by 14.1%--22.4%, closing 71.9%--76.5% of its gap to the erasure-aware oracle encoding, when only 20% to 50% of the tokens survive.

Ada-TokenCom: Rate-Adaptive Token Communications via Large-Model-Driven Token Compression and Generation

Token Communications (TokenCom) has recently emerged as a new paradigm in which tokens serve as unified units for communication and computation, enabling efficient multimodal semantic and goal-oriented transmission. In this paper, we develop Ada-TokenCom, a rate-adaptive TokenCom framework based on large autoregressive models, which integrates next-token prediction with arithmetic coding to achieve ultra-low bitrate semantic communication at the token level. We propose a mixed reconstruction/generation scheme, where the transmitter encodes and transmits the highly informative tokens at the beginning of the token sequence leveraging a pre-trained autoregressive large model, while the receiver uses an identical model to predict the rest. Moreover, we design a Lyapunov-based algorithm to dynamically optimize both the source compression rate and the modulation and coding scheme, adapting to time-varying network conditions. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed Ada-TokenCom framework outperforms both digital and deep joint source-channel coding-based semantic communication baselines.

ToDMA: Large Model-Driven Massive Token Communications for Semantic Multiple Access

Token communications (TokenCom) is an emerging generative semantic communication paradigm, where tokens serve as compact representation units across modalities. Their contextual dependencies can be exploited by pretrained large models for semantic recovery. In this paper, we propose token-domain multiple access (ToDMA), a large-model-driven semantic multiple access scheme for massive token communications. ToDMA integrates unsourced random access with context-aware token processing. It enables massive uncoordinated devices to transmit tokenized source representations over common uplink resources. Specifically, each token index is associated with a shared modulation codeword, exposing token-level structure to the receiver for context-aware recovery. At the receiver, compressed sensing is first employed to jointly detect active tokens and estimate their corresponding channel state information (CSI) from the superposed signals. The source token sequences are then reconstructed by exploiting the consistency of token-associated CSI across multiple token positions. In the presence of token collisions, some active tokens may remain unassigned, leading to missing entries in the reconstructed token sequences. To recover these tokens, candidate-restricted masked-token prediction is performed using pretrained contextual models, thereby leveraging token-level context to mitigate collision effects. Simulation results on both image and text transmission tasks demonstrate that ToDMA reduces access latency while maintaining favorable token recovery and semantic reconstruction quality, showing its scalability for semantic multiple access.

Semantic One-Dimensional Tokenizer for Image Reconstruction and Generation

Visual generative models based on latent space have achieved great success, underscoring the significance of visual tokenization. Mapping images to latents boosts efficiency and enables multimodal alignment for scaling up in downstream tasks. Existing visual tokenizers primarily map images into fixed 2D spatial grids and focus on pixel-level restoration, which hinders the capture of representations with compact global semantics. To address these issues, we propose SemTok, a semantic one-dimensional tokenizer that compresses 2D images into 1D discrete tokens with high-level semantics. SemTok sets a new state-of-the-art in image reconstruction, achieving superior fidelity with a remarkably compact token representation. This is achieved via a synergistic framework with three key innovations: a 2D-to-1D tokenization scheme, a semantic alignment constraint, and a two-stage generative training strategy. Building on SemTok, we construct a masked autoregressive generation framework, which yields notable improvements in downstream image generation tasks. Experiments confirm the effectiveness of our semantic 1D tokenization. Our code will be open-sourced.
