A systematic review of generative AI usage for IT project management

Abstract

This paper aims to synthesize current knowledge on generative AI in IT project management using the PRISMA methodology to provide researchers with a comprehensive perspective on techniques, applications, adoption trends, limitations, and integration across project management tools and process groups. The analysis reveals a clear dominance of OpenAI's GPT in the included studies but relying primarily on prompt engineering, suggesting that research in this area remains at an exploratory stage. Finally, it identifies and discusses three promising research directions for AI-enabled project management, including process group-specific AI agents, project role-based AI agents, and hybrid collaborative networks that enable human-guided orchestration.

Preliminary Guidelines for Using and Evaluating GenAI Tools to Support Systematic Literature Reviews

Context: Generative AI (GenAI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly used for academic tasks in software engineering and beyond, including systematic literature reviews (SLRs). However, while capable of summarizing text, there is no guarantee they can meet the rigour, reliability, and transparency that SLRs require. Objectives: To support researchers intending to conduct SLRs using GenAI or those conducting empirical studies evaluating how well GenAI supports SLR tasks. Methods: First, we conducted a rapid review to identify studies that propose guidelines for evaluating and using GenAI and LLMs to support SLRs. Second, we drew on thought experiments, relevant guidance from the literature, and our own experience conducting SLRs and evaluating tools to develop recommendations for how to use and assess GenAI in the context of SLRs. Results: We discuss the problems researchers face when evaluating GenAI for SLRs. We identify and explain process issues to consider when planning, conducting, and reporting both SLRs using GenAI and evaluations of GenAI tools. Finally, we summarize our results as a set of process recommendations, which we name GUEST (GenAI Use and Evaluation in SLR Tasks). Conclusion: We argue that GenAI requires human oversight and is not currently capable of unsupervised systematic studies. However, it offers the prospect of cost-effective assistance for some repetitive tasks and for additional validation of some complex tasks. Our GUEST recommendations should help software engineering researchers both to conduct and report trustworthy SLRs using GenAI and to provide rigorous independent evaluation studies.

Generative Artificial Intelligence for Literature Reviews

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), based on large-language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, has taken organizations, academia, and the public by storm. In particular, impressive GenAI capabilities such as summarization of large text corpora, question-answering, data extraction, and translation, carry profound implications for the conduct of literature reviews. This impacts science, organizations and the general public, as all can benefit from GenAI-supported literature reviews. Building on the technical foundations of GenAI and grounded in established methodological discourse, this work outlines approaches for conducting literature reviews using both general-purpose (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) and specialized GenAI tools (e.g., Consensus, Elicit). We provide illustrative examples of prompts and suggest methodologically-sound literature review strategies. Throughout this perspective paper, we adopt a balanced approach considering both the opportunities and the risks of relying on GenAI in the conduct of literature reviews. We conclude by discussing philosophical questions related to the effects of GenAI on long-term scientific progress, and also present fruitful opportunities for research on improving the core of GenAI's technology-its architecture and training data-and suggest open issues in GenAI-based literature reviews methodology.

The Landscape of Generative AI in Information Systems: A Synthesis of Secondary Reviews and Research Agendas

The post-ChatGPT surge has rapidly reframed IS research and practice. As organizations and society grapple with GenAI adoption, a body of secondary studies and research agendas has emerged to synthesize early evidence and chart directions for future inquiry. This study reviews secondary and roadmap papers to synthesize the state of knowledge on GenAI's benefits and challenges in IS, and to identify future research directions. We performed a systematic search across Scopus, WoS, and eAIS for publications from 2023 onwards. Following a rigorous, multi-stage screening process, we selected a final set of 28 papers for analysis using bibliometric mapping and thematic analysis. We also conducted a quality assessment of all sources to gauge confidence in each source's contribution to the findings. GenAI offers transformative potential to drive productivity, accelerate innovation, personalize services, and democratize access to expertise. However, its adoption is constrained by interrelated challenges: technical unreliability, societal-ethical risks, and a governance vacuum. Interpreted through a socio-technical lens, our findings reveal a persistent misalignment between GenAI's fast-evolving technical subsystem and the slower-adapting social subsystem, positioning IS research as critical for achieving joint optimization. To bridge this gap, we propose a research agenda that reorients IS scholarship from analyzing impacts toward actively shaping the co-evolution of technical capabilities with organizational routines, societal values, and regulatory institutions: emphasizing hybrid human-AI ensembles, situated validation, design principles for probabilistic systems, and adaptive governance. For practitioners and policymakers, responsible adoption requires balancing automation with human augmentation alongside transparent governance and adaptive regulations to ensure broadly shared benefits.
