GIFGuard: Proactive Forensics against Deepfakes in Facial GIFs via Spatiotemporal Watermarking

Authors: Shupeng CheZhiqing GuoChangtao MiaoDan MaGaobo Yang

Abstract

The rapid evolution of deepfake technology poses an unprecedented threat to the authenticity of Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) imagery, which serves as a representative of short-loop temporal media in social networks. However, existing proactive forensics works are designed for static images, which limits their applicability to animated GIFs. To bridge this gap, we propose GIFGuard, the first spatiotemporal watermarking framework tailored for deepfake proactive forensics in GIFs. In the embedding stage, we propose the Spatiotemporal Adaptive Residual Encoder (STARE) to ensure robustness against high-level semantic tampering. It employs a 3D convolutional backbone with adaptive channel recalibration to capture globally coherent temporal dependencies. In the extraction stage, we design the Deep Integrity Restoration Decoder (DIRD). It utilizes a spatiotemporal hourglass architecture equipped with 3D attention to restore latent features, allowing for the accurate extraction of watermark signals even under severe facial manipulation. Furthermore, we construct GIFfaces, the first large-scale benchmark dataset curated for GIF proactive forensics to facilitate research in this domain. Extensive results show that GIFGuard achieves high-fidelity visual quality and remarkable robustness performance against deepfakes. Related code and dataset will be released.

Exposing and Mitigating Temporal Attack in Deepfake Video Detection

While spatiotemporal deepfake detectors achieve high AUC, our experiments reveal their susceptibility to evasion attacks. These models tend to overfit on fragile temporal spectrum cues, rather than learning robust semantic causality. To mitigate this vulnerability, we propose SpInShield, a temporal spectral-invariant defense framework explicitly designed to decouple semantic motion from manipulatable spectral artifacts. We propose a learnable spectral adversary that dynamically synthesizes severe spectral deformations, simulating extreme attack scenarios. By employing a shortcut suppression optimization strategy, SpInShield compels the encoder to extract reliable forensic cues while purging unstable spectral statistics from the latent space. Experiments show that SpInShield obtains competitive performance on widely used datasets and outperforms the strongest baseline by 21.30 percentage points in AUC under simulated amplitude spectral attacks.

Deepfake Detection in Social Media: A Temporal Artifact Analysis Using 3D Convolutional Neural Networks

Synthetic facial videos have proliferated across social media faster than platform moderation can respond, raising the cost of disinformation and identity-based attacks. Frame-level deepfake detectors degrade sharply as generator quality increases; high-quality 128x128 GAN output cuts spatial-only accuracy by five percentage points while leaving temporal inconsistencies largely intact. We address this gap with a 3D Convolutional Neural Network detector based on R3D-18, trained with a composite loss that combines binary cross-entropy with a temporal-consistency regularizer. The model processes 16-frame clips from the DeepfakeTIMIT dataset and is initialized from Kinetics-400 action-recognition weights. We report 92.8% accuracy on intra-dataset evaluation at 128x128 resolution; cross-dataset transfer to FaceForensics++ without fine-tuning reaches 76.4%, rising after minimal fine-tuning. Ablation studies show that transfer learning contributes 7.2 percentage points and face tracking adds 3.5 points, while temporal consistency regularization provides additional gains on high-quality fakes. The results establish that temporal artifacts generalize more broadly than spatial ones, providing a detection signal that survives social-media re-encoding.

Robust Deepfake Detection: Mitigating Spatial Attention Drift via Calibrated Complementary Ensembles

Current deepfake detection models achieve state-of-the-art performance on pristine academic datasets but suffer severe spatial attention drift under real-world compound degradations, such as blurring and severe lossy compression. To address this vulnerability, we propose a foundation-driven forensic framework that integrates an extreme compound degradation engine with a structurally constrained, multi-stream architecture. During training, our degradation pipeline systematically destroys high-frequency artifacts, optimizing the DINOv2-Giant backbone to extract invariant geometric and semantic priors. We then process images through three specialized pathways: a Global Texture stream, a Localized Facial stream, and a Hybrid Semantic Fusion stream incorporating CLIP. Through analyzing spatial attribution via Score-CAM and feature stability using Cosine Similarity, we quantitatively demonstrate that these streams extract non-redundant, complementary feature representations and stabilize attention entropy. By aggregating these predictions via a calibrated, discretized voting mechanism, our ensemble successfully suppresses background attention drift while acting as a robust geometric anchor. Our approach yields highly stable zero-shot generalization, achieving Fourth Place in the NTIRE 2026 Robust Deepfake Detection Challenge at CVPR.
