Abstract

In most real-world image-to-image (I2I) scenarios, existing evaluations primarily focus on instruction following and the perceptual quality or aesthetics of the generated images. However, they largely fail to assess whether the output image preserves the semantic correspondence and spatial structure of the input image. To address this limitation, we propose StableI2I, a unified and dynamic evaluation framework that explicitly measures content fidelity and pre--post consistency across a wide range of I2I tasks without requiring reference images, including image editing and image restoration. In addition, we construct StableI2I-Bench, a benchmark designed to systematically evaluate the accuracy of MLLMs on such fidelity and consistency assessment tasks. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that StableI2I provides accurate, fine-grained, and interpretable evaluations of content fidelity and consistency, with strong correlations to human subjective judgments. Our framework serves as a practical and reliable evaluation tool for diagnosing content consistency and benchmarking model performance in real-world I2I systems.

Instruction-based Image Editing: A Survey on Data, Models, Evaluation, and Applications

Instruction-based Image Editing (IIE) aims to transform a given image into a new one based on textual instructions. Advances in Large Language Models (LLMs) and Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have accelerated progress toward practical ``one-sentence image editing" systems. This survey presents a systematic taxonomy and comprehensive review of IIE research, structured around five core dimensions: (1) task definition and hierarchical categorization of editing operations, (2) methodologies for training data construction, (3) architectural evolution from GAN-based to diffusion and autoregressive paradigms, (4) standardized evaluation metrics and benchmark development, and (5) introduction of commercial solutions. Our analysis shows critical technological milestones across model generations. We further propose a Comprehensive, in-Depth, and Diagnostic benchmark for IIE task (CDD-IIE Bench), which can rigorously assess the multiple aspects of model performance. Through empirical comparisons of open-source solutions, we highlight their respective capabilities and limitations. Finally, we discuss future research directions to advance the field.

DiffCap-Bench: A Comprehensive, Challenging, Robust Benchmark for Image Difference Captioning

Image Difference Captioning (IDC) generates natural language descriptions that precisely identify differences between two images, serving as a key benchmark for fine-grained change perception, cross-modal reasoning, and image editing data construction. However, existing benchmarks lack diversity and compositional complexity, and standard lexical-overlap metrics (e.g., BLEU, METEOR) fail to capture semantic consistency or penalize hallucinations, which together prevent a comprehensive and robust evaluation of multimodal large language models (MLLMs) on IDC. To address these gaps, we introduce DiffCap-Bench, a comprehensive IDC benchmark covering ten distinct difference categories to ensure diversity and compositional complexity. Furthermore, we propose an LLM-as-a-Judge evaluation protocol grounded in human-validated Difference Lists, enabling a robust assessment of models' ability to both capture and describe visual changes. Through extensive evaluation of state-of-the-art MLLMs, we reveal significant performance gaps between proprietary and open-source models, highlight the critical importance of reasoning capability, and identify clear limitations in model scaling. Our framework also demonstrates strong alignment with human expert judgments and strong correlation with downstream image editing data construction quality. These findings establish DiffCap-Bench as both a reliable IDC evaluation framework and a practical predictor of downstream utility. The benchmark and code will be made publicly available to support further research.

TIIF-Bench: How Does Your T2I Model Follow Your Instructions?

The rapid advancements of Text-to-Image (T2I) models have ushered in a new phase of AI-generated content, marked by their growing ability to interpret and follow user instructions. However, existing T2I model evaluation benchmarks fall short in limited prompt diversity and complexity, as well as coarse evaluation metrics, making it difficult to evaluate the fine-grained alignment performance between textual instructions and generated images. In this paper, we present TIIF-Bench Text-to-Image Instruction Following Benchmark), aiming to systematically assess T2I models' ability in interpreting and following intricate textual instructions. TIIF-Bench comprises 5,000 prompts organized along multiple dimensions and categorized into three levels of difficulty and complexity. To rigorously evaluate robustness to prompt length, each prompt is provided in both short and long versions with identical core semantics. We further propose a novel Global Normalized Edit Distance (GNED) metric for text rendering and provide aspect-ratio-diverse reference images for each prompt to assess style control. In addition, we collect 100 high-quality designer-level prompts covering diverse scenarios for comprehensive evaluation. To enable scalable and fine-grained evaluation, we explore the best paradigm for leveraging the world knowledge encoded in large Vision-Language Models (VLMs) as automated binary evaluators. Through extensive ablations, we develop a fully reproducible evaluator that provides interpretable reasoning and reliable verification, enabling our benchmark to discern subtle variations in T2I model outputs. Through comprehensive benchmarking of mainstream T2I models on TIIF-Bench, we analyze the strengths and weaknesses of current T2I systems and reveal the limitations of existing evaluation benchmarks.
