Anatomy of a Query: W5H Dimensions and FAR Patterns for Text-to-SQL Evaluation

Abstract

Natural language interfaces to databases have gained popularity, yet the theoretical foundations for evaluating and designing these systems remain underdeveloped. We present QUEST (Query Understanding Evaluation through Semantic Translation), a framework resting on two independently motivated components: the FAR structural invariant, which holds that every well-formed query reduces to Filter, Aggregate, and Return operations; and the W5H dimensional framework, which holds that all filtering criteria map to six semantic dimensions (Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How). Validated across five text-to-SQL datasets (n = 120,464), FAR conformance is universal across all domains and schema types, while W5H dimensional profiles vary substantially. Healthcare queries are strongly concentrated in temporal (WHEN: 80.4%) and person-centric (WHO: 73.0%) dimensions far exceeding general-domain benchmarks, and causal (WHY) and mechanistic (HOW) reasoning are near-zero everywhere, with apparent HOW exceptions reflecting quantitative aggregation rather than genuine procedural reasoning. These results identify a frontier that must be crossed for genuine machine reasoning over structured data.

Schema-First Retrieval: Embedding Catalogs for Natural Language Analytics

Enterprise text-to-SQL systems often fail before SQL is generated: the model receives the wrong schema context. Modern warehouses contain thousands of tables, abbreviated columns, informal metrics, hidden join conventions, and permission boundaries that are not captured by raw table names. We introduce Schema-First Retrieval, a retrieval layer that embeds catalog metadata rather than warehouse rows. The system indexes five typed catalog objects, tables, columns, metrics, relationships, and query history, using object-specific text templates. At query time, it combines parallel vector search, lineage expansion, cross-encoder reranking, workload memory, and deterministic access-control gates before SQL generation. On CRUSH4SQL (1,534 questions), Schema-First Retrieval reaches 96.4% table recall@20 and cross-encoder reranking adds +11.1 points at column recall@10; against an equally-templated BM25 baseline, semantic retrieval is +32.8 points at table recall@5. On SEDE (857 questions), query history raises table recall@5 from 52.1% to 92.3%. On BIRD (96 questions), schema-first context reduces SQL execution errors from 15.6% to 6.2%, a 2.5x reduction. These results show that catalog selection is a first-class retrieval problem for natural language analytics, not a prompt formatting detail.

SemanticAgent: A Semantics-Aware Framework for Text-to-SQL Data Synthesis

Existing text-to-SQL synthesis pipelines still conflate executability with semantic validity: syntactic checks and execution-based validation can retain queries that execute successfully while violating database semantics. To address these limitations, we propose SemanticAgent, a semantic-aware synthesis framework. SemanticAgent organizes synthesis around three specialized modules: an analyzer, a synthesizer, and a verifier. Through a three-stage protocol of semantic analysis, stepwise synthesis, and diagnostic refinement, SemanticAgent transforms execution-based validation alone into a traceable reasoning process. Our framework generates synthetic data that consistently outperforms prior synthesis methods under semantic-quality evaluation, leading to stronger downstream fine-tuning performance, especially on semantically demanding benchmarks.

EntSQL: A Benchmark for Grounding Text-to-SQL in Long-Context Enterprise Knowledge

Text-to-SQL enables natural language access to databases, and recent LLMs have substantially advanced its capabilities. Existing benchmarks such as Spider, BIRD, and Spider~2.0 evaluate schema generalization, large-scale databases, and realistic workflows, but largely overlook enterprise scenarios where SQL generation depends on private business knowledge, such as internal metrics, reporting conventions, and organizational rules. We introduce EntSQL, an enterprise-oriented Text-to-SQL benchmark for evaluating long-context grounding over proprietary business documents. EntSQL contains 1,066 aligned Chinese-English semantic examples across five business domains, with most examples requiring domain knowledge beyond the question and schema and involving complex SQL structures. On English inputs, the best evaluated system reaches only 15.9% when long-form documents are provided, highlighting the difficulty of grounding SQL generation in enterprise knowledge.
